I had to ask myself this recently: “What is stopping me from achieving the things I know I can achieve but haven’t been able to see come to fruition.”

Sadly, I think I may not believe in myself enough. Or perhaps I feel I don’t deserve to have success in my goals or dreams. There are many things that block us from getting things done – both the mundane and the important things we need to do and want to do in our lives. Sometimes it is just lack of motivation that holds us back. Sometimes it is a lack of focus. And of course there are real obstacles that stand in our way at times – such as just being too tired after doing the things that we have to do to maintain a “normal” life (working, spending needed time with friends and family, doing chores at home, etc.)

How DO people rise above the obstacles and become above average at anything? It must take a very strong desire that sets our “will” to achieve things that are out of the ordinary, such as being really good at a hobby, learning a new skill or playing an instrument.

And even if you desire something very much, it doesn’t always make achieving whatever goal you have possible. For example, let’s say you have the goal of reorganizing a messy room of your house. What if every time you look at the disorganized papers and clutter it just exhausts you to even consider tackling it. That is the kind of internal obstacle I am trying to write about here. What I don’t know is this: how does someone actually overcome those feelings of inadequacy or lack of motivation to actually get something done that is a hard thing for them personally to accomplish. Experts recommend just working on the mess in short 15-minute segments to clear the clutter day-by-day.

There is a saying, “How do you eat an elephant?” Well, the answer to that is: “One bite at a time.” Of course the real problem isn’t about elephants at all. The problem is how to succeed at a task that seems impossible. And the answer would be a little bit at a time.

So, for newbie guitar players, it is essential to understand that to learn to play guitar as a beginner, you won’t learn everything at once. You have to take it a step at a time. Just like climbing a mountain, there are no quick ways to get to the top. Only taking one step and then another and another will get you to your goal. Practice 20 minutes to a half an hour at a time on a daily basis - or at least every other day. If you stay committed to practicing regularly, you will see improvement. The worst thing you could do is practice manically for a few days and then stop. So, try just doing a little practice often.

And if you find there are distractions to your guitar practicing, such as the radio or the TV – make yourself restrict their use until after you practice. Then, after you practice, you can reward yourself with those things that were pulling at your attention.

If you feel you are taking steps but things are not falling into place the way you think they should…dig deep inside and try to find out if there is a part of you that isn’t fully committed or isn’t able to totally believe in the fact that you WILL become a guitar player. Work on that belief, make it grow – don’t let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do (including that voice inside your head). Tell yourself you DO deserve to achieve what you are willing to work hard for. And keep taking the steps, one by one, to get to your dreams. Not trying will NEVER get you there, so keep trying – and you might, yes, you probably will get there!

The super talented group Jagged Edge have released their most recent CD on the Columbia recording label, entitled Hard.

Jagged Edge have been a super stars in the Rock genre for quite a while now and Hard is an excellent illustration as to why.

Hard has a nicely varied, mix of 15 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly superb musicians. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

Overall Hard is a solid release. Quite possibly Jagged Edge’s best to date. Really sensational from beginning to end. If you’re even mildly into Rock music you’ll enjoy this CD.

While this entire CD is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 2 – Walked Outta Heaven, track 7 – Trying To Find The Words, and track 15 – They Ain’t JE – Remix.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – They Ain’t JE. Wow!

Hard Release Notes:

Jagged Edge originally released Hard on October 14, 2003 on the Columbia label.

1. They Ain’t JE 2. Walked Outta Heaven 3. Girls Gone Wild – (featuring Major Damage) 4. Visions 5. Hard 6. Dance Floor 7. Trying To Find The Words 8. What’s It Like 9. Tryna Be Your Man 10. I Don’t Wanna 11. In Private 12. In The Morning 13. Shady Girl 14. Car Show – (bonus track, featuring Big Boi) 15. They Ain’t JE – (remix, bonus track, featuring Street Katz/Woonie)

In the latest years, confirming the tendency by now established in many countries of the world, even in Italy a new household appliance has made its way into our houses: the videogame console.

The newness is not so much a matter of sales increasing of these devices, which have been very popular among teenagers and keen hardcore gamers for a long time, as of a different approach, that is of its target.

The videogames console has now become part of the daily life of many families: no more children playing alone in front of the screen but whole families spending together their spare time challenging each other in a joypad battle.

In the beginning there was the Playstation, that marked its opening to a new audience through a new pink colour: a marketing strategy aimed at approaching the girls to this typical masculine object.

From then on, the videogames producers have carried out the most various strategies in order to expand their customers base, even through unusual marketing choices, like having as testimonials fifty year old man and women from the show business.

Nintendo, for example, not only chose Nicole Kidman to advertise its portable console Nintendo DS, but created a domestic background commercial where mum and dad were satisfied to observe their sons learning English and Maths in their bedrooms till late.

Not to mention the wide success obtained by another Nintendo console: the Wii. In one of its first commercials Giorgio Panariello was defeated in his living-room by his grandma’ playing tennis. The innovation of this console is, in fact, the immediacy correspondence between the movement of the body and what is reproduced on the screen: instead of a joypad you use a sort of remote control which has inside it several detectors that recognize the real action and cast it on the video.

By using this device, a wide range of accessories has been created: you can buy peripherals of different shapes like a guitar by which you can identify yourself in a rock singer or a steering wheel to emulate a car driver. You can also connect a balance board to measure your weight and lose the overweight with the help of the personal trainer offered by the videogame.

The other characteristic which contributed to expand the videogames users is the possibility to connect these consoles online. In these field, the best one has been developed by Microsoft: the Xbox 360. The name itself gives the idea of a multimedia center suitable for every member of the family, created to play, listen to music, watching movies, images and pictures and to which you can connect devices like digital cameras, MP3 players, DVD or PC. Connecting a microphone you can also interact with other players from all over the world in order to exchange advices and game’s strategies communicating in real time.

In this way these devices have been transformed from niche products addressed to a limited target into common objects that you can easily see in everyone’s living room, maybe next to a television or a computer and by which you can do a lot of things: not only a game but real entertainment.

Looking at the current technological panorama, finally, it is possible to identify two different evolutionary lines of the videogame medium: on the one hand the simplification of the interfaces to widen the user-consumer base (Nintendo), on the other hand the boost toward a combined use of different media to offer more entertainment solutions (Microsoft).

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve that passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Along with the diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome comes considerable pain and impairment along with numbness, paresthesia (pins and needles) and loss of hand strength, coordination, and pincer grasp. This impairment is problematic for almost any profession; however, it can be entirely disabling for musicians.

The most widely diagnosed nerve entrapment disorder, carpal tunnel syndrome, is characterized by pain, swelling, numbness, and tingling in the hand and wrist. The disorder stems from excessive stress and strain placed on the arm, wrist, and hand that result from repetitive and/or static (non-moving) flexion of the fingers and wrist. This unidirectional strain causes a muscle imbalance in the hand and forearm, resulting in the stronger, shorter flexor muscles that close the hand to compress the underlying median nerve within the carpal tunnel, which is central to hand, and wrist movement.

The median nerve actually begins in the neck and travels through the shoulder joint through the Brachial Plexus down to the elbow and eventually to the carpal tunnel joint in the wrist. With repetitive unidirectional motions / activities being performed on a regular basis, the imbalanced muscles in the hand and forearm can cause the carpal bones that form the carpal tunnel to become misaligned, creating pressure and pain in the wrist as the bones compress the median nerve within. Critically, it is not only carpal tunnel syndrome that can result from an existing muscle imbalance in the hand and arm, but also other repetitive strain injuries that involve the ulnar and radial nerves at the wrist or elbow junctions. Thus, effective treatment must address muscle length and strength imbalances that may be present in the entire upper extremity region.

For musicians, carpal tunnel syndrome can be akin to a death sentence. Incapacitated through the hand and forearm, musicians may have to modify practice and performance routines. It is impossible to play the piano, strum the guitar, or manipulate the bow of a cello without superb dexterity and responsiveness in the fingers and wrist. Rest is often the first-line recommendation for treating carpal tunnel syndrome, but it is an option that few professionals can afford to take.

Thankfully, there are effective treatments that can protect against the development of carpal tunnel syndrome in musicians and that can curb the impact of symptoms as soon as they emerge. Strategically designed exercises that target specific muscles and groups of muscles in the hand and forearm have been shown to reduce symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome with ninety percent effectiveness.

If anyone recommends gripping, squeezing, pinching or finger-walking exercises, run the other direction, as these are the exercises / movements that musicians perform too much of in the first place and are the muscles that are already overused on a daily basis. Musicians need to strengthen the opposite muscles that they overuse. It is that simple. Keeping muscle groups with 25% strength of each other will reduce muscle and joint imbalance, reducing the possibility of musicians becoming afflicted with carpal tunnel syndrome or other finger, hand, wrist, elbow or shoulder injuries. Balance is the key.

It is important to consult with a physician or healthcare professional before beginning any type of exercises program for the treatment of injuries.

One word describes the CD Festival from Santana… AWESOME!

Refreshingly, this was one of those CDs I was able to just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

Festival is a nicely varied, mix of 11 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly gifted artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

Overall Festival is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Rock collection. Truly an outstanding Rock CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

While the entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 2 – Let The Children Play, track 6 – Let The Music Set You Free, and track 11 – Maria Caracoles.

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – Carnaval. Great track!

Festival Release Notes:

Santana originally released Festival on August 28, 1990 on the Legacy Recordings label.

CD Track List Follows:

1. Carnaval 2. Let The Children Play 3. Jugando 4. Give Me Love 5. Verao Vermelho 6. Let The Music Set You Free 7. Revelations 8. Reach Up 9. River, The 10. Try A Little Harder 11. Maria Caracoles

Santana: Carlos Santana (guitar, bass, percussion, background vocals); Leon Patillo (vocals, piano); Pablo Tellez (vocals, bass, percussion); Tom Coster (keyboards, synthesizer, percussion, background vocals); Paul Jackson (bass); Gaylord Birch (drums, tympani, percussion); Chepito Areas (congas, timbales, percussion); Raul Rekow (congas, percussion, background vocals); Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Orin Waters, Francisco Zavala, Joel Badie (background vocals).

I am currently staying at, “La Nuestra”, a comfortable bed and breakfast with 4 guest rooms, a private swimming pool and an outdoor breakfast area complete with microwave and fridge, which has a rather interesting story. It is co-owned by two women, Andie Grater and Nancy Gray, who are both originally from the United States.

Originally from Brooklyn, Andie had lived in Atlanta for 20 years and become an expert in advertising production and management while Nancy, on the other hand, had been involved in the screen printing business. Nancy represented several American companies in the Latin American market and spent quite a bit of time in Latin America, including Cuernavaca, and this was the beginning to their Mexican adventure.

Andie’s comments shed light on the decision to relocate to a foreign country and the inevitable issues of culture shock and psychological adjustment that go along with the move to a strange land. Her story will also illustrate coping mechanisms and the fact that the human spirit will indeed adjust over time.

As Nancy had been spending more and more time in Mexico, Andie and Nancy were starting to think it might actually be nice to live somewhere else. Cuernavaca might be a good destination since it was close enough to easily go back and forth. Andie had attended a Spanish course at the Cetlalic Alternative Language School and had a chance to meet a lot of people from Cuernavaca’s local gay community and Cuernavaca increasingly looked like an interesting destination.

Both women thought that it might be a good idea to move to Cuernavaca, a goal they decided to accomplish in the New Millennium. So Andie decided to give up her job in advertising which was made easier by the after-effects of 911 which had severely affected the advertising industry.

Andie worked for a month with the previous owner of Villa San Marcos to gain some practical experience running a bed and breakfast. So the women put their furniture into storage in Atlanta and after their arrival in Cuernavaca they first lived in a furnished apartment. They later moved into an unfurnished condo, a rather bare place, which Andie describes as “graduate student living”. Andie admitted that as you get older these types of transitions get just a little harder.

Prior to their purchase, their B&B had been empty for five years. Once they acquired the property, they invested another year of renovations into La Nuestra. Building a clientele from scratch is always an issue for new entrepreneurs and Andie indicated that their clients mostly find them through the Internet and through word of mouth. In addition, Andie sent many news releases to independent booksellers and feminist book stores to request that the information about their B&B be put on their bulletin boards.

As new B&B owners, Andie and Nancy also decided to advertise on three web sites, two sites about Mexico and one site dedicated to gay travelers. Andie stressed, however, that their target market is not only the gay community, but people from all walks of life. Travellers come from the United States (California, Minnesota, and various places in the north), but also from Canada. In addition, they also host many weekend guests from Mexico City. Many of their guests don’t even move when they come here, they just relax in the beautiful garden by the pool and say this place feels just like home.

I asked Andie to elaborate on this process of cultural transition which they went through after they first relocated to Mexico. At first they felt excited, the place was new, they were learning the language, and there was this general feeling of newness that made everything so interesting.

But as the newness wore off, feelings of culture shock started to settle in. Andie experienced frustrations as she had to adjust to the Mexican concepts of time and reliability. Adjusting to the much more relaxed concept of time was difficult, especially since Andie had been living her life in Atlanta with a strict agenda. The unreliability of workmen and repair people was also a frequent source of frustrations. Andie told me a few stories of her renovation project and mentioned that workers might show up a day later or sometimes not at all.

On the other hand she was impressed by the easy-going attitude of local Mexican people and commented that they are very helpful when you make an effort to speak Spanish. Traffic can also be quite bad in this city. On the issue of cultural adjustment Andie said, that one of her friends commented on how great it must be to live in this new place while Andie admitted that many times this adjustment phase was really tough on her, especially at the beginning. She was missing her friends, her culture, her familiar environment.

Now things are much better. Andie runs an organization called the Newcomers Club which is an association of recent, mostly English-speaking residents, of Cuernavaca. The club had been in existence for 15 years, but had not been very active. Andie became president about four years ago, and the club now has around 170 members, ranging in age all the way from their forties and up. The oldest member is 91 years old.

The Cuernavaca Newcomers Club has a number of functions:
- It welcomes new English-speaking residents and helps them find their way
- It publishes a service directory every 2 years
- It provides a buddy system
- The club hosts a variety of social events throughout the year
- Speakers are invited to the club’s meetings and speak on various topics of interest, such as ecology, globalization, alternative health, investments and many more.
- The club is involved in a variety of charity projects as well.

The Newcomers Club holds two big social events a year: a cocktail party in September and a holiday party around Christmas time. Evening events include guitar concerts, talks on topics of interest and a “studio crawl” where the group visits different artists’ studios around town. An increasing number of social events will be held over the summer months as well, which used to be a quieter time.

One of the Newcomers Club’s most important involvements is in philanthropy. At Christmas members are encouraged to adopt a family in collaboration with the Episcopal Church. The club itself is non-denominational, but the church provides a list of 15 of the most needy families. Then, with the help of donations, the club purchases boxes of basic items that are given away to these needy families.

The Newcomers Club is also involved with a Mexican Charity called “Caminamos Juntos” which was founded by Susan Smith, a Canadian woman. Caminamos Juntos para la Salud y el Desarollo dedicates itself to helping one specific Mexican village in the state of Guerrero. This village has many problems: the water supply contains a toxic level of arsenic, there is a lot of poverty and alcohol abuse. Every month Caminamos Juntos asks for different supplies, e.g. in September the charity requests school supplies, in December it requests blankets, and at Christmas the charity request non-battery operated toys.

Andie indicated that the average age of newcomers to Cuernavaca is in their 50s. She added that dollars go a lot further in Cuernavaca than they would in Florida or the Caribbean.

In addition to volunteering with the Newcomers Club, Andie also donates her time to a local library called the Guild House. She volunteers four Friday mornings a months, two in the library, two with the Newcomers Club. Together with her work as a B&B owner at La Nuestra this keeps her busy.

Nowadays she still goes to back home to the United States about 4 to 5 times a year. Nancy and Andie still have a small apartment in Atlanta where they stay when they go home. Andie and I had a great conversation about her travel experiences in Israel and Spain, and about Latin machismo which also manifests itself on the road (a woman cutting a man off on the road will definitely incur his wrath, while the opposite is just considered normal).

I am one of these people who thinks that one day in my life I’ll probably try to spend 2 or 3 months of the year in a warm place, and Andie’s experience in Cuernavaca has given me some valuable insights about the decision-making process, the cultural adjustment phase, and the rewards of getting involved in a local volunteer organization.

Godsmack, very talented Rock group have released their latest album titled IV and Wow! It’s good.

I wish it weren’t the case but, it’s not everyday that I get a CD for review that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with IV. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

IV has a pleasantly varied, mix of 11 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly talented musicians. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own personal experiences.
Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Butterfly gets. Butterfly stated simply is one of Maria Carey’s best CDs to date.

Unfortunately, it’s not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just can’t force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Butterfly. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you’ve got one of Maria Carey’s most impressive releases ever.

Overall Butterfly is an outstanding release. Quite possibly Maria Carey’s best to date. Really sensational from beginning to end. If you’re even mildly into Pop music you’ll enjoy this CD.

While this entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 5 – Fourth Of July, track 9 – Whenever You Call, and track 12 – Outside

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 – Honey. Outstanding!

Butterfly Release Notes:

Maria Carey originally released Butterfly on September 16, 1997 on the Columbia label.

CD Track List Follows:

1. Honey 2. Butterfly 3. My All 4. Roof, The 5. Fourth Of July 6. Breakdown 7. Babydoll 8. Close My Eyes 9. Whenever You Call 10. Fly Away – (Butterfly Reprise) 11. Beautiful Ones, The 12. Outside

Personnel: Mariah Carey, Mase the Lox, Dru Hill (vocals); Michael Cirro (guitar); Donald Parker (piano, keyboards); Walter Afanasieff (keyboards, synthesizers, programming); Stevie J, Dan Shea, Cory Rooney (keyboards, programming); Peter Scwartz (keyboards); Gary Montoute (Hammond B-3 organ); Artie Reynolds (bass); Nathaniel Townsley (drums); Q-tip (programming); Krayzie Bone, Melonie Daniels, Wish Bone, Mary Ann Tatum, Kelly Price, Trey Lorenz, Clarence (background vocals). Producers include: Sean “Puffy” Combs, Stevie J, Mariah Carey, Walter Afanasieff, David Morales. Engineers include: Dana Jon Chappelle, Rich Travali, Glen Marchese, Mike Scott, David Gleeson. Principally recorded at: The Hit Factory, New York, New York.

Music courses are a great way to learn about virtually any area of music; history, theory, and musical instrument instruction — you name it and somewhere music courses specialize in it. Though generally found through colleges, universities or high school programs, courses are also offered via one-on-one instruction with a private teacher or community-based workshops. Some churches even offer courses as a complement to their choirs; the courses may be offered to the general public, but they’re often geared toward the choir members and congregation.

In the last few years, however, a new dimension to learning music has appeared in the form of the internet the world wide web. Now instead of being limited to classroom courses, students are free to create their own schedules and learn at their own pace. A quick search on Google or Yahoo will turn up online courses in:

-Chord Piano

-Classical Piano For Beginners

-Improvising on the Piano & Guitar

-Rock Guitar

-Praise & Worship Guitar

-Killer Drum Instuctions

-Black Gospel Piano

-Jazz Piano

and many many more

Music courses offered by colleges are generally far more in-depth than other courses and are usually only available to degree-seeking students (though some colleges offer courses as part of their continuing education programs). Lower level college courses often focus on an amalgamation of music theory and history, teaching individual theory concepts based on the historical period to which they are particular. As the courses grow in skill level so too does the number of specialized topics. Advanced courses are available for nearly every historical music period and are sometimes based on one particular movement. Advanced courses for theory grow increasingly more difficult and slowly teach every detail found in modern theory; it’s during the theory courses that students intending to major in music have their skills challenged the most — some even refer to these music courses as a weeding out period.

Instrument-based courses are equally as tough at the college level, though they usually assume a working knowledge of the instrument before the class begins. Those wishing to learn an instrument, therefore, are better off with private courses or courses offered by a community orchestra or social group. These courses will focus on the basic details of learning an instrument, starting from the very beginning. Fingering, theory and music reading will be covered, in addition to the occasional bit of history. Students of these courses may then wish to move on to college-level courses after completing a few years of private instruction.

But for those more interested in recreational music in other words, music that is played for personal enjoyment or to entertain family and friends, college music classes are not at all necessary. The internet abounds with wonderful courses that will help you do everything from play at your church to accompany your child on their flute or trombone, or even play in a jazz or rock or fusion or country group.
